The Hollow Coast Chapter 01
The Last Lighthouse
At the edge of the known coast, the beacon has gone dark.

Sample chapter · The real chronicle is still to come
By the time the last light slipped behind the hills, we had stopped pretending we knew where we were going. The road narrowed to a ribbon of pale stone, and somewhere beyond the trees a bell rang once.
Nobody spoke. There are silences that belong to the wilderness, and silences that mean someone is listening. This felt like the second kind.
A stranger at the crossroads
We found the traveler beside a fallen signpost, warming their hands over a fire that gave off no smoke. A worn leather satchel lay open at their feet. Inside was a map of the valley, though none of us recognized the names.
“You are late,” the traveler said, as if this explained everything.
The fire bent toward the mountains. For a moment, the shadows around us seemed to lean in and listen.
Our first instinct was to ask questions. Our second was to count the exits. Neither did us much good.
The choice before us
There were two paths through the pass: the sheltered track along the river, and the old road beneath the watchtower. One promised safety. The other promised answers.
In the end, it was a small thing that decided us: a familiar mark carved into the signpost, almost hidden by moss. Someone we knew had passed this way before.
We shouldered our packs and followed the road uphill. Behind us, the fire went out.
